Apple is pushing to transform Siri into a ChatGPT competitor, despite earlier reluctance from AI chief John Giannandrea, Bloomberg reports. The company is exploring enabling Siri to tap the web for data synthesis.
Internal tests show Apple’s chatbot now rivals recent ChatGPT versions. A stronger Siri could offset the potential loss of the $20 billion Alphabet pays yearly for Google’s default search status in Safari, a deal under U.S. antitrust scrutiny. Apple also plans to let Siri control iPhone apps via voice, reinforcing the $20 billion App Store by ensuring apps remain relevant alongside chatbots.
For iOS 19, slated for WWDC 2025, Apple plans to enhance Apple Intelligence with features like AI-optimized battery management and a virtual health coach, Gurman reports. Major Siri upgrades, including those promised last year, are months from release and won’t be highlighted at WWDC. Apple will distance Apple Intelligence branding from Siri’s poor reputation and avoid announcing features far ahead of launch.
