When Apple switched from Intel processors to its own silicon for its Mac models, the 24-inch iMac mark a dramatic departure from the black/silver design from the 21.5″/27″ iMac to an even more minimalistic design that is very colorful, and that design lives on to this day. Additionally, today’s iMac design has light-gray bezels and still retains the chin, which has been a hallmark feature of the iMac’s design for over two decades as it now houses the whole computer underneath the 24-inch display in this design.
Today, Kosutami on X posted something we all did not know until now. Apparently, before the EVT (Engineering Validation Test) stage of the Apple Silicon-based iMac, Apple had tested prototypes of the said iMac with an Apple logo on the chin. In fact, the Apple logo was always on the chin since the iMac G5 from 2004, which would influence future designs of the iMac as it laid the foundation of the iMac’s form factor. However, the final design of the Apple Silicon iMac omitted the Apple logo on the chin, but that iMac still has a giant Apple logo on the back. In my opinion, I’m all for the final design where there’s no Apple logo on the chin since it brings more minimalism to the design, and it would allow the design to show more of the pastel color without any distractions.
Today’s iMac design made its debut on April 2021 in seven dazzling colors. When Apple updated the iMac with the M4 chip, it brought newer hues that are more popping than ever before. The efficiency of Apple Silicon and the minimalism of the design shows how space-efficient Apple is able to pack a full-fledge computer in an all-in-one system.
