Earlier this week, The Information reported that Apple has apparently delayed the launch of the iPhone Air 2, which was originally planned for fall 2026, to as early as spring 2027. With this delay in mind, this could give Apple extra time to redesign the iPhone Air to address one of its biggest shortcomings.

The iPhone Air is certainly ahead of its time in terms of design, but making a phone so thin means several compromises. If you take a look at the base iPhone 17, which starts at $799, it features two rear cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. On the other hand, the iPhone Air, which is priced higher at $999, features just one rear camera: a 48MP Fusion Wide camera. And for $100 more, you could get the more capable iPhone 17 Pro, which has three rear cameras. So the iPhone Air sits in this odd middle ground between the base and the Pro models.

All that said, Apple is looking to add a second camera to the iPhone Air 2; of course, that would be another engineering feat since most of the components are located in the camera plateau area, so redesigning the internals to fit another camera would require more development. Usually, iPhone designs are finalized two years in advance before their debut.

With the iPhone Air being delayed, we could now expect three iPhone models to debut in fall 2026: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and “iPhone Fold.” Apple could launch the iPhone Air 2 alongside both the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, which will be part of Apple’s new strategy in splitting the releases of the non-Pro and Pro iPhone models.

We’ll have to wait and see if Apple will deliver on a much-improved iPhone Air.
