Apple Rolls Out New Firmware for Magic Keyboard, Trackpad, and Power Adapter

It is not every day that we talk about software updates for our chargers and keyboards, but Apple has just released a batch of surprise firmware updates for several Mac accessories. While we are used to seeing notifications for iOS and macOS updates, these silent tweaks are rolling out now to the Magic Keyboard (USB-C), Magic Trackpad (USB-C), the older Magic Trackpad 2, and even the 140W USB-C Power Adapter. This was first spotted by MacRumors.

The 140W USB-C Power Adapter has moved to version 1.4.84 (up from 1.4.73). Meanwhile, the USB-C Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad have both jumped to version 3.1.9, replacing versions 3.1.4 and 3.1.3, respectively. Additionally, the Magic Trackpad 2 is seeing a bump to version 3.1.8. Because there is no official change log, we are left to assume these updates focus on general performance improvements, bug fixes, and perhaps better connectivity.

If you are wondering how to force this update, the short answer is: you can’t. Unlike your iPhone or Mac, Apple’s accessories do not have a “Check for Update” button. The firmware installs automatically in the background while the accessory is actively paired to your Mac or plugged in.

Have you noticed any changes in responsiveness or battery life since these updates rolled out? Let us know in the comments if your Magic Keyboard is feeling any snappier today!
