International Data Corporation (IDC) has released a new report predicting a massive shake-up in the smartphone world, especially the foldables. According to their latest report, Apple is set to officially enter the foldable smartphone market at the end of 2026, and the impact is expected to be nothing short of seismic. IDC forecasts that the worldwide foldable market will jump from a steady 10% growth in 2025 to a staggering 30% year-over-year growth in 2026.
IDC predicts that Apple’s entry into the foldable space will come with a premium price tag (likely $2,400), significantly higher than the current average for standard smartphones. Despite the high cost, the demand is expected to be intense. The report projects that in its very first year, Apple will capture over 22% of the unit share of the foldable market. Even more impressive is the financial impact; Apple is expected to command 34% of the total market value for foldables immediately upon launch.
We often see this pattern: a technology exists for years, but it doesn’t truly hit the “mainstream” until Apple puts its stamp on it. Francisco Jeronimo, Vice President of Client Devices at IDC, echoes this sentiment, noting that the launch will mark a “turning point” for the segment. “Apple tends to be a catalyst for mainstream adoption of new categories,” Jeronimo explains. While foldables may remain a niche segment in terms of raw volume compared to standard slabs, they are becoming a critical value driver. With average selling prices expected to be three times higher than standard phones, this category is where the industry’s financial growth will happen.
While all eyes are on Apple’s year-end 2026 debut, the competition is heating up in the interim. Samsung is expected to kick start 2026 with a “Galaxy Z Trifold,” bringing tri-fold innovation to global consumers. Meanwhile, Huawei is seeing strong growth with its HarmonyOS Next foldables. However, the data suggests that Apple’s arrival is the tide that lifts the entire boat. As consumers hold onto their standard phones longer, the industry desperately needs the innovation and excitement that a foldable iPhone brings to motivate upgrades.
It looks like 2026 is shaping up to be the year of the fold. While the $2,400 price tag might make some of us wince, history shows that Apple users are willing to pay for premium quality and a polished ecosystem experience. What do you think?
