The MacBook Pro has long been rumored to get upgraded with tandem OLED displays as soon as this coming fall, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman believes Apple may as well brand these upcoming high-end laptops as the “MacBook Ultra” since they’re now expected to be positioned on top of the existing MacBook Pros.
But when it comes to the MacBook Air, we may have to wait a bit longer, as Bloomberg recently indicated that the MacBook Air wouldn’t receive that huge display upgrade no earlier than 2028. Reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also suggested a similar timeframe as well. The MacBook Air could get a “stop-gap” upgrade by switching to mini-LEDs before making the huge jump to OLED, but there haven’t been any rumors regarding this, although some rumors claim that the MacBook Air could receive the improved oxide-TFT LCD displays in a future iteration.
Both the iPhone and the Apple Watch have had OLED displays for years. The iPad Pro switched to tandem OLED displays almost two years ago with the M4 iteration, while the rest of the iPad lineup sticks to LCD displays. The MacBook Pro currently features mini-LED displays, while both the MacBook Air and the new MacBook Neo have LCD displays. Of course, we all know the benefits of OLED displays compared to mini-LED and LED-backlit LCDs: higher brightness levels, substantial contrast levels, brighter highlights, deeper blacks, improved color accuracy, and unparalleled efficiency. Apple is definitely planning to bring OLED displays to even more products, including the iPad mini, iPad Air, and the iMac, so the future is definitely bright for Apple.
