Previously, it was reported that Apple planned to bring OLED displays to even more of its products down the road. Now, a report from TrendForce indicates that Apple is looking to adopt even more advanced OLED panels, this time with a wider color gamut. Currently, most of Apple’s products with built-in Retina displays cover the DCI-P3 wide color gamut. Those products that Apple offers today include:
- All MacBook models except the MacBook Neo
- iMac
- Studio Display and Studio Display XDR
- All iPad models except the iPad (A16)
- All iPhone models
According to TrendForce, those OLED panels that are set to be featured in some of Apple’s future products would cover 95% of the BT.2020 color standard, which far exceeds the range of colors of the P3 color spectrum. This would mean deeper and more accurate reds, greens, and blues. However, achieving better color accuracy would require two things: improving the precision when it comes to controlling individual pixels and changing the layer’s chemistry within each pixel. Other approaches that TrendForce indicates include adding extra “helper” materials to allow individual pixels to convert energy into light more efficiently while emitting more precise color and maintaining more sustained brightness levels overall.
OLED displays have come a long way when it comes to advancements in their technology. We’ve seen this before when Apple brought tandem OLED displays to the iPad Pro, which were two OLED panels stacked together to provide double the brightness levels and contrast ratios while maintaining the energy efficiency and overall longevity of the display. Of course, we expect Apple to bring that same OLED technology along with touchscreen technology to the upcoming “MacBook Ultra“, which will launch by the end of this year or in early 2027. While Apple will eventually bring OLED displays to other mid-tier products such as the MacBook Air, iPad mini, and iPad Air, Apple will likely reserve the more advanced OLED panels for its higher-end products, including future models of “MacBook Ultra”, MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and iMac.
