Apple’s digital identification initiative continues to grow in the United States. The latest sources indicate Apple Wallet license support is expanding. However, the roll-out remains limited to individual states rather than being available nationwide.

The company first introduced support for storing a driver’s license or state-issued ID in Apple Wallet in 2021. Apple presented the feature as an important step toward reducing the need to carry a traditional physical wallet. Since then, Apple has gradually added support for more locations.

Residents in 14 states and Puerto Rico can use a compatible driver’s license or state ID with Apple Wallet. This applies to supported iPhone and Apple Watch devices.

The gradual expansion also shows how digital identification depends on cooperation between Apple and individual state governments. Each state must establish its own systems and requirements before residents can use a digital credential.

More states are working toward Apple Wallet support

Several other states could join the program in the coming months or years. However, they are at different stages of development, and not every state has announced a firm launch date.

Kentucky: Kentucky is among the states closest to joining the Apple Wallet program. The state indicates that mobile ID support will roll out in summer 2026.

North Carolina: North Carolina is another state with a clearer timeline. Support for storing a driver’s license in Apple Wallet is expected to arrive in early 2027.

Oklahoma: Oklahoma is pursuing mobile driver’s license support, and officials have not established an official launch date for Apple Wallet.

Utah: Evidence points to Utah as part of a forthcoming roll-out. Evidence in Apple’s software and backend systems points to possible Apple Wallet support. However, Apple has not announced a specific release date.

Virginia: Virginia is another state where work toward Apple Wallet driver’s license support appears to be underway. As with Utah, there is currently no confirmed public launch schedule.

Connecticut and Mississippi: Connecticut and Mississippi are somewhat less certain. Apple previously identified Connecticut as involved in its digital ID initiative. Apple has also associated Mississippi with the company’s plans. There is limited information about when either state might make Apple Wallet driver’s licenses available.

This distinction matters because identifying a state as an Apple partner does not mean it is close to launching the feature.

Other states are exploring digital driver’s licenses

Apple isn’t the only organization tracking the expansion of mobile IDs.

Several states have been examining digital driver’s licenses through legislation, pilot programs, or government studies. These include Indiana, Vermont, New Jersey, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Nevada, and Wyoming.

However, being involved in a mobile-ID project does not automatically mean that Apple Wallet support will follow.

Each state has its own requirements for identity verification, security, privacy, infrastructure, and government approval. As a result, the timeline can vary substantially from one state to another.

The technology also needs to work with existing identification systems and meet the requirements of organizations that may need to verify a person’s identity. This can make a statewide launch more complicated than simply adding a new feature to an iPhone.

Apple Wallet’s digital ID roll-out remains gradual

The expansion of digital driver’s licenses has been considerably slower than some might have expected when Apple first announced the feature.

Even though the technology allows users to present identification electronically, adoption depends heavily on state governments and the organizations that need to accept digital IDs.

Having a mobile driver’s license does not mean you can use it everywhere that accepts a physical license. Support from businesses, government agencies, airports, and law enforcement can vary.

For that reason, carrying a physical driver’s license may still be necessary in many situations, even for people who have a digital version in Apple Wallet.

A passport-based alternative is already available

People who live in states that don’t yet support driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet do have another option.

Apple introduced a separate Digital ID feature in 2025 that allows eligible U.S. users to create an identity credential using their U.S. passport.

This isn’t a replacement for a state-issued driver’s license, but it can be used for identity verification at participating Transportation Security Administration checkpoints. Apple says the feature is supported at more than 250 airports across the United States.

The passport-based option gives eligible users another way to present digital identification while the state-based driver’s license program continues to expand.

More expansion could be on the way

For now, Apple Wallet driver’s license support remains a state-by-state process. Kentucky and North Carolina have relatively clearer timelines, while Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia appear to be further along in development without confirmed launch dates.

Connecticut and Mississippi remain less certain.

The broader trend is nevertheless clear: more U.S. states are investigating mobile identification, and Apple’s Wallet is likely to remain one of the platforms through which these credentials become available.

For iPhone users, the prospect of leaving a physical driver’s license at home is getting closer. However, the technology is still in the early stages of adoption, and most Americans will continue to need their physical identification for the foreseeable future.
