According to the Twitter account @URedditor, next year’s standard iPhone 16 models will mark the return of the vertical camera layout akin to those of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. Apple has switched to a diagonal camera layout since the iPhone 13 to make room for the larger sensors and to make the camera layout not look awkwardly big.
While we do expect the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus to retain the diagonal layout, if the return of the vertical layout turns out to be true, this will further set the iPhone 16 apart from the iPhone 15 aside from the design details such as the Dynamic Island and USB-C port. Although it’s unclear why Apple would revert to the vertical layout, it’s plausible that Apple has figured out how to fit the larger sensors within the vertical layout again.
We expect Apple to introduce the iPhone 16 in September 2024, and things could change a bit before Apple commits to the final production of the design in advance.
