Apple has been offering the 12.9-inch iPad Pro for over eight years, and it has featured a mini-LED display. Now, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, it looks like Apple will replace that model in favor of a rumored 13-inch model with an improved OLED display next year.
Apple first brought the mini-LED technology to the largest 12.9-inch iPad Pro back in 2021, and that display technology offers increased brightness and improved contrast ratios. However, the smaller 11-inch model has retained an LED-backlit LCD. As we expect Apple to debut both models with larger OLED displays than the current models, we can also expect price increases on both of them. Nevertheless, the switch from LCD technology to OLED technology will certainly be worth the wait and the price jump as OLED displays offer much better brightness and improved contrast ratios than existing LCDs, and with the existing ProMotion technology found in iPad Pro, the adaptive refresh rates could go down to 10Hz, similar to the OLED displays found in the current iPhone models.
With the expected price hike on both iPad models, one possible outcome we could see based on recent rumors is the upcoming addition of a larger 12.9-inch iPad Air model to fill in the price gap between the iPad Air and iPad Pro. We don’t expect to see any updates to any of the iPad models at all this year, but we can expect Apple to update all of its models next year. However, don’t expect any of the lower-end models to adopt the OLED technology as that’ll certainly be reserved for the flagship iPad Pro models.
