The iPad Pro was last redesigned in October 2018, and it has carried the same design for over five years. As the iPad Pro is due for a redesign, we’ve been expecting the iPad Pro to receive a huge makeover this month, and CAD images obtained by MacRumors have highlighted how thin both of the iPad Pro models could be.
OLED displays are currently being used in the Apple Watch and iPhone. Several benefits of OLED displays are improved brightness, better contrast ratios, and improved efficiency. All iPads except the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro have been using traditional LED-backlit LCDs. So adding OLED panels to the upcoming iPad Pro allows Apple to redesign the iPad Pro, and since OLED panels are thinner than typical LCD panels as they don’t require a backlight, this could allow the iPad Pro to be as thin as 5.0 mm. For comparison, the thinnest iPod Apple sold was the iPod nano (7th generation), and it was 5.4mm thin.
The CAD renders shown here are needed for case manufacturers to develop cases for the upcoming models ahead of their release.
We previously reported the possible dimensions of the next-generation iPad Pro models:
- Current 11-inch iPad Pro – 247.66 mm x 178.5 mm x 5.9 mm
- Upcoming 11-inch iPad Pro – 249.7 mm x 177.5 mm x 5.1 mm
- Current 12.9-inch iPad Pro – 280.6 mm x 214.9 mm x 6.4 mm
- Upcoming 13-inch iPad Pro – 281.55 mm x 215.5 mm x 5.0 mm
We expect the upcoming iPad Pro models to be announced this month, and it’s expected to feature the M3 chip that was introduced in the latest 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac. We can also expect built-in MagSafe charging, a redesigned Magic Keyboard, and even a third-generation Apple Pencil.
