The iPhone 12 models were introduced back in October 2020, and they introduced MagSafe. Apple recently released iOS 17.4, and MacWorld discovered an interesting detail that some iPhone 12 users may have overlooked.

The latest release of iOS 17 now expands support for Qi2 wireless chargers on iPhone 12, and here’s why that’s great news. When MagSafe was introduced, it was capable of charging speeds of up to 15W. Because MagSafe was relatively new back then, the iPhone 12 was also compatible with existing third-party Qi wireless chargers. However, because they weren’t MagSafe certified to begin with, those chargers were limited to just a maximum of 7.5W.

That’s when the next generation of the open standard of wireless chargers comes into play because Qi2 offers the same maximum charging speeds of 15W, and it’s going to be the industry standard in several third-party chargers such as Anker. That’s why Apple has been expanding support for Qi2 chargers on all of its modern iPhone models that feature MagSafe starting with its latest iPhone 15 models. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models followed suit in iOS 17.2, and the iPhone 12 models also received the same treatment this month.

With Qi2 support on all iPhone models with MagSafe, customers will enjoy the same fast charging experience with third-party chargers with the new standard.
