Today, at WWDC 2020, we have received one of the biggest updates to the Mac software line-up in the last few years, macOS Big Sur. In this article, we will break down all of the changes coming to macOS 11.

macOS Big Sur will be one of the biggest redesigns ever since the introduction of Mac OS X. Pushing towards a new direction, Apple has decided to redesign the color palette, icons and different versions of windows shown on desktop. Also, in order to improve the way users interact with their devices, a new control center  is on its way, alongside the redesigned Notification Center.

One of the biggest changes coming this fall is the newest version of Safari. With an stellar focus on privacy and performance, this is shaping up to be the best web browser available to users. New customization features will be introduced so you can accommodate Safari to make the best use of it while you surf the web. Also, a new version of extensions makes them safer than ever before.

Two of the oldest versions on macOS are getting a massive redesign, Messages and Maps. The first one will add better organization options, such as pinned conversations, Memoji and other text effects that will bring this version closer to the way it has been on other Apple platforms for a while. On the other hand, Maps will include different features already present on the iPad version of the app, such as Look Around and other information related to commuting, with details such as cycling routes and EV trips.

On a technical aspect, this seems to be one of the most complex versions of macOS, including different versions of Catalyst apps, and adding more apps written on SwiftUI code, such as the one used in the new iOS widgets. Also, the introduction of Xcode 12 will reinvent the apps we are currently getting on our devices, written by the world’s most talented developers.

Even though we didn’t see a massive change of features, macOS Big Sur is one of the most revolutionizing pieces of software that Apple has ever put out, giving the Mac line-up one of the more robust user interfaces and performances in the industry.
