Earlier this year, Apple expanded its Find My network to third-party accessories and launched its own item finder AirTag. Along with iOS 15 announced this week, Apple announced several important software features for AirPods – one of them is finding your lost AirPods Pro or AirPods Max.
For years, people could only locate their lost AirPods with the Find My app when they were within Bluetooth range. Now, with iOS 15, the Find My network allows Apple devices to crowdsource the location of AirPods Pro/Max similar to AirTag. The aforementioned devices when in close proximity with any Find My device will transmit encrypted signals over Bluetooth LE. This will relay the approximate location for these devices even when they’re out of Bluetooth range, by bouncing off Apple’s global network of mobile devices.
Other helpful features for lost devices include alerts for leaving your AirPods behind, a Find My widget, and the ability to find a lost powered-down iPhone.
