Twitter is adding one of the most requested features since its launch in 2006. It is a pretty simple feature though very important: an edit button. Yes, the company is legitimately developing this feature.
This news comes following Elon Musk becoming the largest shareholder in the company by buying $3 billion (%9.2) of shares. On Monday, Musk asked his followers in a tweet poll if they want an edit button, with a resounding %73.5 saying yes.
The San Francisco-based social platform will finally let users fix typos without the need to retweet, reply, or plain delete and rewrite the tweet.
Because now on Tuesday, the company announced on its TwitterComms page that the feature is being tested on Twitter Blue Labs while “learning what works, what doesn’t, and what’s possible” until rolling the feature out to everyone:
“now that everyone is asking”¦ yes, we’ve been working on an edit feature since last year! no, we didn’t get the idea from a poll we’re kicking off testing within @TwitterBlue Labs in the coming months to learn what works, what doesn’t, and what’s possible.”
The social platform has also previewed how users will be able to edit tweets by tapping the three dots next to tweets and then tapping on “Edit Tweet.” Although it is still unclear how the feature will exactly work.
Twitter’s head of consumer product Jay Sullivan stated in a thread on Tuesday that editing tweets “has been the most requested Twitter feature for many years,” adding that “without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation”.
For many years, Twitter has been trolling users by stating time and time again that they are working on an edit button, however, this time is different. Elon Musk — CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and others, as well as one of the richest people in the world — is slowly becoming a powerful figure in the company. The top executives have also confirmed that the feature is indeed coming.
In other news, iPhone 6 users are no longer able to access the Twitter app on their device since it is considered to be outdated and not running a newer version of iOS. However, there are still a couple of Twitter apps in the App Store.
