In case you didn’t notice: PBS & PBS Kids apps no longer supported on older Apple TVs

Avatar for David Becker

In the last few years, the Apple TV third generation and older Apple TVs have lost a lot of apps, and right now is no different.

These apps include ones such as FOX NOW, CBS All Access, YouTube, MLB, ESPN, ABC News, and Hulu have all lost support for older Apple TVs in the past couple of years. Needless to say, these older Apple TVs are dying a slow death.

With that said, it was announced back in March 2023 that both the PBS and PBS Kids apps are no longer being supported on the Apple TV third generation and older.

When the apps are loaded on the older Apple TVs now, it shows a page that highlights how the PBS and PBS Kids no longer work on that device.

The reason for these changes is due to the simple fact that the tech in those devices is outdated.

“Due to the older age of the Apple TV 2 and 3 models, Apple no longer supports these devices, and PBS is unable to update our apps on the older Apple TVs. This means that content on our app is breaking over time, and we’re unable to fix it or offer troubleshooting when a menu, show, or video has an issue on the app. This is not a problem unique to PBS, and many other apps on the older Apple TV models are ending support as technology moves forward.”

The PBS and PBS Kids are currently available on the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K, or pretty much any Apple TV with tvOS on it. Users can also download the apps on an iPhone and iPad too.
