If you’re looking for more camera upgrades, then it might be better for you to wait until the iPhone 16 Pro. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the next iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature a vastly improved Ultra Wide camera with a larger 48-megapixel sensor for the first time. The Ultra Wide camera was first found in the iPhone 11 series, and it started with a 12MP sensor, so this increase in resolution will be the first for an Ultra Wide camera on an iPhone.
The 48MP sensor first made its way into the main camera on the iPhone 14 Pro before it became a standard across the entire iPhone 15 lineup. The 48MP main camera adds an additional 2× optical zoom mode now it uses the middle 12 megapixels of the sensor to capture with no digital zoom. Some great features of the 48MP sensor are that it captures more light and uses “pixel binning” to capture data from groups of four pixels and merge them into a single “superpixel”. When capturing in either 1× or 0.5× mode, Capturing moments in the dark with Night Mode will greatly benefit from this improvement in camera performance. As with the current iPhone 15 Pro models, users will also be able to shoot improved low-light photos in both HEIF Max and ProRAW formats.
Another camera feature that Kuo expects is that the tetraprism Telephoto camera will be standard on both the iPhone 16 Pro models. In terms of the roadmap for the iPhone, the iPhone 17 Pro will have 48MP sensors across the entire Pro camera system, including the Telephoto lens. Additionally, the front camera will have a larger 24MP sensor with a six-element lens.
The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to debut this coming September.
