PSA: Vision Pro Won’t Let You Arrange Apps

Vision Pro will officially launch on February 2, so it goes without saying that this will be a first-generation product. Hence, it will come with the first version of its spatial operating system, visionOS. Therefore, you should expect several limitations similar to when Apple introduced the original iPhone.

One notable omission you should take note of is that the arrangement of all the apps is fixed on the home screen. This includes both built-in apps and third-party apps that you’ll download on the App Store. This may be a huge deal breaker for users who prefer to arrange their apps, especially for apps they’ll access more frequently.

To go more in detail, the first page consists of Apple’s built-in apps in this order: TV, Music, Mindfulness, Settings, Freeform, Safari, Photos, Notes, App Store, Mail, Messages, and Keynote. Additionally, there’s a “Compatible Apps” folder with the non-native iPadOS apps.

Third-party apps that you’ll install will appear on the second page and so on, and they’ll be listed in alphabetical order.

If you want to create folders to organize apps better, then you’ll be out of luck as Vision Pro doesn’t have that capability. Unlike on other Apple’s platforms, you cannot create “web apps” from Safari as there’s no ‘Add to Home Screen’ option found anywhere in Safari on Vision Pro.

These are a few omissions that you should consider when buying the Vision Pro. However, because this will be the first version of visionOS, there will always be improvements in the second version, which is expected to be announced at this year’s WWDC.

Take a look at the original version of iOS. You couldn’t arrange apps in folders when the iPhone was introduced. A few years later, iOS 4 added that capability. The original version of watchOS provided a honeycomb grid of apps, which was a bit controversial; however, watchOS 8 added a new view as an option that lists the apps alphabetically, making it easier to navigate for some users.
