We previously reported that Texas-based grocery store chain H-E-B was said to be looking into accepting Apple Pay soon. Now that day has come.
The company announced on its website today that it had begun accepting Apple Pay and contactless payments in its stores.
“Over the next few weeks, H-E-B will begin a phased rollout that will add digital tap-to-pay service to all its H-E-B stores.” Today, is the first day of that rollout.
“Starting Oct. 7, H-E-B will begin its phased rollout, allowing customers to make purchases using digital tap-to-pay services such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay at its flagship stores. During the phased rollout, H-E-B will launch tap to pay region by region and the service will become available at groups of stores each day throughout the month. The service will first become available at H-E-B stores in the San Antonio area, where it will take about a week to launch at every location in the region. Throughout the month, the retailer will continue to roll out the service to all other H-E-B stores across Texas, as well as Mi Tienda stores in Houston.”
Ashwin Nathan, H-E-B Group Vice President of Marketing and Payments, said this feature has been in the works for while.
“At H-E-B, we’re always exploring a broad range of technologies to enhance how customers shop and pay for products,” he said. “This has been one of the most requested services we have received from our customers and Partners, and we are excited to now make this popular technology available at all our H-E-B locations.”
Previously this year, H-E-B had added support for Apple Pay and contactless payments methods at its Central Market stores.
By accepting Apple Pay in its stores now, it also means that Apple Card users that pay from their iPhone or Apple Watch will get 2% in Daily Cash on each purchase they make.
