After Apple’s ‘Awe-dropping’ event concluded, Apple also updated the MagSafe Charger to support Qi2-certified 25W charging speeds. This marked the second time that Apple updated the MagSafe Charger since the MagSafe technology/ecosystem was originally introduced alongside the iPhone 12 models back in October 2020. Last September, the iPhone 16 models enabled faster wireless charging speeds up to 25W via MagSafe, so Apple updated the MagSafe Charger to take full advantage of that capability. However, charging speeds via Qi2 were still capped at up to 15W.
The latest Qi2.2 standard enabled faster wireless charging at the same 25W, so with this week’s update, this will be essentially good news for modern Android smartphones that have the latest Qi2.2 standard, such as Google’s recently-announced Pixel 10 smartphones, as those phones can now take full advantage of faster wireless charging speeds too. So this is a huge win for both Apple and Android users, making MagSafe more open than ever before.
This MagSafe Charger has been available in both 1m and 2m lengths priced at $39 and $49, respectively, and it works with all iPhone models that support wireless charging since the iPhone 8. Keep in mind that the real MagSafe experience, where you magnetically attach the MagSafe Charger to the back of the iPhone, applies to these iPhone models:
- iPhone 12 series
- iPhone 13 series
- iPhone 14 series
- iPhone 15 series
- iPhone 16 series, expect the iPhone 16e
- iPhone 17 series
- iPhone Air
If you still have the original MagSafe charger and have either a compatible iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 model, you won’t be able to utilize the faster wireless charging speeds, but now that Apple has updated this MagSafe Charger, it may be a better time to snag one up if you still prefer charging via MagSafe. Keep in mind that you will need to supply a power adapter (30W or higher) to see faster those charging speeds. Apple discontinued the 30W USB-C Power Adapter, but it did introduce the 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max for your benefit. The MagSafe Charge is available to order at Apple today (link).
