In Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s weekly edition of his “Power On” newsletter this morning, he indicates that Apple is testing a color that some enthusiasts have been wishing for, and that’s a “deep red” or “burgundy” color option for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, which is expected to see its debut this coming September.
As you may know, the iPhone 17 Pro moved from the titanium frame to an aluminum body, which gives Apple even more flexibility to offer more bold colors for the Pro model now that it’s much easier to coat actual colors on the aluminum using an anodization process. The new color options have proven to be a wide success, especially in China, with the bold Cosmic Orange finish that many people would mistake for “Hermès Orange.”
Offering some sort of deep shade of red on the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro would be an interesting move. Despite red and orange being adjacent to each other on the color wheel, Gurman expects that Apple may as well offer both of those colors on the iPhone 18 Pro. Believe it or not, Apple started offering a “red” color option on the iPhone starting with the iPhone 7 in March 2017 through the partnership with (PRODUCT)RED. But Apple stopped offering the red option starting with the regular iPhone 15 models in September 2023, and Apple would eventually phase out the (PRODUCT)RED option across the Apple Watch and other related accessories. With that said, if Apple were to bring the “burgundy” color option to the iPhone 18 Pro, I’d highly doubt that Apple would market this phone as (PRODUCT)RED. We’ll have to wait and see what the final colors will be for that phone.
On the other hand, the upcoming “iPhone Fold”, or I would call it the “iPhone Ultra” with its rumored biggest battery, will apparently have two minimalistic color options: black and white (and nothing in between). This was previously rumored a few weeks ago, and it shouldn’t be surprising, as adding more colors would increase the manufacturing costs overall, and thus, this “iPhone Fold” may be Apple’s most ambitious product that could start at around $2,300.
We’re about halfway through the iPhone’s update cycle, so we’ll continue to report any new reports about Apple’s upcoming flagship iPhones.
