On this day in 1955, Steve Jobs was born. He, along with Steve Wozniak, co-founded Apple on April 1, 1976, so this year will mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of that company. Jobs oversaw the development of the Apple II, the Lisa, and most prominently, the original Macintosh, which launched on January 24, 1984. The following year, Jobs left Apple following internal struggles to form his new company, NeXT. It wasn’t until 1997 that Jobs returned to Apple, which was on the verge of bankruptcy. He also became the CEO, and with the acquisition of NeXT, he helped the company get back on track by introducing the iMac. Over the next several years, he introduced the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad, which helped the company generate even more revenue and become one of the largest mobile device companies in the world. Jobs resigned from Apple on August 24, 2011, and six weeks later, on October 5, 2011, Steve Jobs passed away.

He left an amazing legacy in both Apple and the entire tech industry, and everyone continues to honor his legacy to this very day. There’s even a “never-before-seen” interview from the Steve Jobs Archive that you should check out. Later this year, the United States Mint will mint a $1 coin that will feature Steve Jobs. This coin will represent California as part of the American Innovation Dollar Coin Program. There will be several ways to obtain this coin, including purchasing in coin rolls, obtaining them in uncirculated, proof, and reverse proof conditions, or even in this year’s coin sets.
