Last week, Apple updated the rest of the MacBook lineup with the M5 generation of chips, including the newly announced M5 Pro and M5 Max on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, as well as added the newest addition to the line: the MacBook Neo. Today, Apple launched all the MacBook models that were announced last week. However, Apple apparently has even bigger plans for the Mac for the rest of this year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in the recent weekly edition of his “Power On” newsletter.
Now that Apple’s entire lineup has been updated, this leaves only the desktop Macs to be updated next. Starting off the list is the Mac Studio, which Gurman believes that it could see an update in the middle of the year, most likely during WWDC, since this would give Apple the opportunity to promote this workstation computer to developers who will be working extremely hard at creating and developing apps.
Gurman also expects both the Mac mini and the iMac to be updated later this year, following the Mac Studio’s update. While these desktops aren’t expected to get redesigned, Gurman indicates that the iMac will receive a “refreshed color palette.” This could mean that the iMac would have different hues of existing colors, or entirely new colors that haven’t been offered on the iMac before. Although Gurman has no word on which chips these Mac desktops will receive, given Apple’s patterns, it’s likely that the iMac could be updated with the M5 chip, the Mac mini could be updated with the M5 and M5 Pro chips, and the Mac Studio with the M5 Max and M5 Ultra. As this report implies, we shouldn’t expect any updates for the Mac Pro this year, as Gurman has no mention on that desktop in his report. This continues to show that Apple continues to moving away from the Mac Pro in favor of the Mac Studio.
Last, but not least, Apple has long been rumored to launch MacBooks with OLED touchscreens this coming fall. However, rather than being a substantial upgrade to the existing MacBook Pro, Gurman indicates that it will be an entirely new, highest-end addition to the MacBook lineup on top of the MacBook Pro, potentially dubbed the “MacBook Ultra.”
This year is not only the 50th anniversary of Apple, but it will also be, without a doubt, a huge year for the Mac.
