Apple announced its plans to bring Sign in with Apple and Hide My Email under one email domain back in June of this year. Both of them would have been issued on private.icloud.com according to the announcement, with existing addresses remaining unaffected.
However, several users pointed out a limitation to this change, allowing apps and websites to easily block the particular private.icloud.com domain from signing up, effectively defeating the purpose of the Hide My Email feature.
In view of this concern, Apple has announced an update to this:
“Starting later this year, new Sign in with Apple addresses, previously issued on privaterelay.appleid.com, will be issued on private.icloud.com. Existing addresses on privaterelay.appleid.com will continue to work and forward mail to users without interruption.
After further consideration and reviewing community feedback, iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com.”
As implied, email addresses created using Hide My Email will continue to be issued on the icloud.com domain, while Sign in with Apple addresses will be issued on private.icloud.com as originally planned.
iCloud+ subscribers who are currently using these features with existing addresses will be unaffected, and this update will only apply to new Sign in with Apple addresses created when this change comes into effect later this year. App developers will be required to update their account systems and email validation to work with the new address alongside the previous one.
