Today during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2022), the company has announced the next generation of CarPlay as part of iOS 16, adding support for many vehicle controls such as climate control, speedometer, widgets, and more.

This is the largest update to CarPlay since its launch back in 2014 which will provide more than just an iOS-like infotainment screen for drivers. The iOS-based infotainment system will now be much more able to provide for the users by integrating deeper into the vehicle’s hardware. The way this works will enable users to control climate and radio, inside the CarPlay experience.

Apple stated that the next generation of the infotainment system will provide drivers with a speedometer, temperature, fuel level, and more on the digital dashboard (if the vehicle supports one). CarPlay will be more personal just like the new iOS 16 features – users will be able to add widgets such as Music or Weather to the interface and/or the dashboard for at-a-glance details.

Apple gave viewers a “sneak peek” of the upcoming digital experience, saying that CarPlay will adapt to the display of any of the supported vehicles, whether the infotainment display is as big, small, wide, long, and more. The many functions of the system will fully integrate with the vehicle.

Finally, the Cupertino-based giant has listed the first vehicles to gain the new infotainment system, with further information on each brand to be detailed in the future, here is the full list:

  • Acura
  • Audi
  • Ford
  • Honda
  • Infiniti
  • Jaguar
  • Land Rover
  • Lincoln
  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Nissan
  • Porsche
  • Volvo

Wait a minute! What? Wow, that’s so awesome. It feels really great to know that the latest Apple CarPlay system is equipped with better remote control features for our vehicle speed and internal heat too, which is a total upgrade for our own convenience. My son has been thinking of installing something like that inside his car probably next month. I’ll advise him to consult a professional beforehand so the end result will be totally mindblowing.
