While we’re about one month away from Apple’s anticipated introduction of the iPhone 16 lineup, reputable analyst Jeff Pu came out with another report that next year’s iPhone 17 lineup will feature an upgraded 48MP front-facing camera.
The last time we saw a major upgrade to the “selfie” camera was with the iPhone 11 lineup where Apple bumped the megapixel count from 7MP to 12MP. Apple also introduced a new feature called “slofies”, aka slow-motion selfies, if you still remember that marketing term. Currently, the iPhone 15 lineup’s 12MP selfie camera is comprised of five plastic lens elements. So for the future iPhone 17 lineup, the selfie camera is expected to also be upgraded with six plastic lens elements. While front-facing cameras will never provide the same, exceptional quality that you’d expect from the main rear camera, having a boost in the number of lenses will nevertheless allow for significant improvements in image quality. Just like what Apple did with the 48MP wide camera, having a higher megapixel count in the front camera will allow for “zoomed-in” selfies to look sharper as photos can be cropped to still retain those details.
The iPhone 17 lineup is expected to be announced around September 2025, and it’s expected to consist of four models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and an all-new tentatively named “iPhone 17 Slim”
