How to beta test Snapchat

Beta testing apps usually means trying to break the app in various ways to get rid of bugs and unpredictable outcomes. Some apps will have special development teams allocated to just testing out new features and potential errors that a regular user could face, only before it’s released to the general public. Testing usually takes place with internal teams, but can then have a small group of users that test applications from the general public.

Some users of apps like Snapchat will want to join beta testing groups which are able to give them access to new features before the main user pool of the app, in order to make sure things work appropriately. Snapchat is known for pushing out ambitious updates which allow for a range of new features and integrations. Snap has most recently done this with their AI embedded features, which include the “My AI” feature, using ChatGPT and OpenAI integration to provide users with a digital companion alongside their real friends and users.

Signing up as a beta tester for Snapchat is quite easy and can be done by following these steps:

  1. From your mobile browser, navigate to snapchat.com/beta which will present you with the expectations of the beta program and the feedback which you are expected to provide. You can also find this in the settings panel of the app under “Account Actions” and then “Join Snapchat Beta”.
  2. Download and sign up for TestFlight – Apple’s beta testing tool specifically for app developers.
  3. Return to Snapchat’s beta page and follow their link to sign up for the program.

Things to note about being in the beta program:

  1. New iOS App Beta versions ship once or twice per week.
  2. All Testers are cycled out of TestFlight. Apple’s tooling limits and Snapchat’s needs for fast feedback on quality requires a pace of installations that ensures rapid engagement on every Beta version shipped.
  3. There are new spots opening up approximately every other day.
  4. To opt out of beta testing, install the public Snapchat app from the App Store.

Sometimes there may be a limit on how many people are testing the app and if Snapchat are accepting new users. This is often the case for the Android beta testers, as there isn’t a dedicated portal for beta updates like TestFlight.
