If you’re planning to buy an iMac now, it’s very best to wait a bit longer. Once you head to the iMac’s order page, you’ll see that many 21.5″ models are now backordered. This includes both the non-4K and 4K. By the way, it’s absolutely crazy that Apple still sells the non-4K model since Apple last updated the non-4K model in June 2017, so no one should buy that model at all. Plus, that model is the last Mac to feature a non-Retina display.
For the base models with the 1080p panels, shipping times have slipped to two weeks. Other configurations such as 16GB RAM/1TB Fusion Drive even push shipping to as late as next month. Yet, the higher end Retina models (both 21.5″ and 27″) are mostly available to purchase.
Last month, Apple discontinued the iMac Pro from 2017 and sold the machine while supplies last. It also discontinued the storage configurations for the 21.5″ 4K iMacs. Recent betas of macOS 11.3 Big Sur even references the upcoming iMac models. 9to5Mac even reported a crash log that references an ARM-based iMac. Earlier this week, Apple sent out invites to next week’s special event, where we expect Apple to debut the next iPad Pro. The recent events have evidently showed that these anticipated iMacs are coming really soon. If Apple were to debut its iMac at new week’s event, the next update to the iMac has to be significant. This includes a redesign as well as the ongoing transition to Apple Silicon. In the past, Apple often debuted its new iMac with a significant redesign, so it’s most likely that we’ll see that iMac as soon as next week.
