Apple Broadens Self Service Repair Program with Exciting New Inclusions

Apple has today announced the expansion of the Self Service Repair program to include the iPhone 14 lineup and newer Mac models such as the 13-inch MacBook Air powered by M2, and MacBook Pro models powered by M2 Pro and M2 Max. Self Service Repair for these devices will be available starting June 21. It is still uncertain whether the new 15-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip is included in this expansion.

Along with these additions, they have also announced that the System Configuration process used for iPhone repairs will now be even easier to use with the postrepair software tool, which according to Apple, ensures repairs with genuine Apple parts. As a result of System Configuration, the Self Service Repair program will also be available to replace Touch ID and Face ID modules.

According to Apple,

“Running System Configuration after a repair authenticates genuine Apple parts, updates firmware, and calibrates parts to ensure maximum performance and quality. Additionally, for repairs involving biometric authentication, such as Touch ID or Face ID, System Configuration links the biometric sensors to the Secure Enclave on the logic board to ensure device security and customer privacy.
Self Service Repair users can now initiate System Configuration by placing their devices into Diagnostics mode and following onscreen prompts. Users no longer need to contact the Self Service Repair support team to run the final step of a repair, but the team will still be available to assist as needed.”

This new inclusion was very much expected due to the nature of the Self Service Repair program. Back in November of 2021, I tweeted about the possibility of Apple expanding this program to include service for Touch ID and Face ID, and today’s announcement confirms that it has become a reality.

Apple first announced this program in November of 2021, which debuted in the U.S. a couple of months later in April 2022 for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups, along with the iPhone SE (3rd generation). In August 2022, Apple brought support for Self Service Repair to M1-based MacBooks, and later in December 2022, the program was launched in Europe.
Apple has now extended this program to include service for the True Depth camera and top speaker of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups as of now along with the M1-based Mac Desktops. These new additions will be available in the U.S., Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the U.K. We can expect the service to also include repairs for the True Depth camera and top speaker for the iPhone 14 lineup in the near future.
With this move, users will enjoy an even more long-lasting Apple Product, holding its electronic value for years due to increased repairability.
