Apple has started rolling out iOS 17.0.3 and iPadOS 17.0.3 to the public with important security updates along with a fix for overheating issues, especially faced on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. These updates come a little over a week after the release of iOS 17.0.2 and iPadOS 17.0.2 to all iOS 17 supported devices.
According to Apple’s Release Notes, iOS 17.0.3 “provides important bug fixes, security updates, and addresses an issue that may cause iPhone to run warmer than expected.”
Last week, Apple shared a statement with Forbes reporter David Phelan:
“We have identified a few conditions which can cause iPhone to run warmer than expected. The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity.
We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system. We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out.”
It seems that the said bug that causes overheating also affected some older iPhone models running iOS 17 along with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
In addition to the above-fixed issue, Apple also fixed two security vulnerabilities in this update:
Kernel Vulnerability: This actively exploited vulnerability has the potential to allow a local attacker to elevate their privileges. Apple has improved checks to address this vulnerability. Apple says that this issue may have been actively exploited against iOS versions before iOS 16.6.
WebRTC Vulnerability: This vulnerability may lead to arbitrary code execution as a result of a buffer overflow. The new version has updated to libvpx 1.13.1 to address this issue.
These fixes are expected to be present in the second betas of iOS 17.1 and iPadOS 17.1 were also released recently.
It is highly recommended to update your iPhone & iPad to the latest software for the best experience and the best security. We would also recommend you to update your apps to their latest versions on the App Store as some third-party apps were also causing the iPhone to overheat.
