If you own a previous generation 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021 or early 2023, the only option to fast charge those models is with a 140W USB-C Power Adapter and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable as the Thunderbolt 4 ports on those machines are limited to up to 100W.

Now that the updated MacBook Pros have officially launched, Apple also updated its support document to mention that the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M3 Pro/Max now also supports fast charging through a 140W USB-C Power Adapter and a 240W USB-C charge cable (2m) that Apple started selling about two months ago. This is a nice alternate option for those who prefer to carry just one cable for their Mac, iPad, iPhone, and AirPods Pro when traveling now that the latest iPhone and AirPods Pro models now moved to USB-C as well. It’s still worth noting that the 240W USB-C charge cable (2m) that Apple offers is limited to USB 2.0 data transfer speeds though.

As a brief refresher, you can fast charge your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro up to 50 percent in about 30 minutes. Fast charging is available on the following models:

  • MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later
  • MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later

You may refer to the support document above to find which power adapter and cable are appropriate to fast charge your MacBook.

The new 16-inch MacBook Pro is now available starting at $2,499. The 140W USB-C Power Adapter is available to purchase at $99, and the 240W USB-C charge cable (2m) is also available at $29.
