Report: iOS 27 to Prioritize Stability over New Features

According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Apple is focusing on stability and bug fixes rather than introducing new features in iOS 27. After the sweeping visual overhaul of iOS 26 and the introduction of the Liquid Glass design language, Apple is reportedly planning to make iOS 27 a “Snow Leopard-style” update. Snow Leopard was designed to hit the pause button: rewrite core code, reclaim disk space, and speed everything up.

It is no secret that iOS 26 has been a heavy lift for both Apple and its users. While the new “Liquid Glass” interface is visually striking, the transition hasn’t been seamless.  Apple’s engineering teams are reportedly now “combing through” the operating systems—including macOS 27—hunting for bloat to cut and bugs to eliminate.

Gurman reports that iOS 27 will lay the foundation for future hardware, specifically foldable iPhones. Just as Snow Leopard paved the way for the Mac App Store and future Intel-based Macs, iOS 27 needs to be lean and flexible enough to power the next generation of Apple hardware. Apple is still playing catch-up in the AI space, and we can expect iOS 27 to integrate new AI capabilities, likely to prevent falling further behind competitors.

Additionally, we should expect refinements to the Liquid Glass aesthetic rather than a replacement. Apple has already started this with its recent updates, and iOS 27 will likely continue to polish the visual language introduced in iOS 26. While flashy new features sell iPhones, stability keeps customers happy. After the ambitious visual reset of iOS 26, taking a year to tighten the bolts, improve battery life, and prepare for the AI era feels like the right move.
