Samsung Display has reportedly begun mass production on the world’s first 8.6-generation OLED production line, according to a recent report from account yeux1122 on Naver. Samsung’s Asan A6 production line officially entered the mass production phase this January.  The 8.6-generation line is specifically designed to produce the high-performance OLED panels destined for the next-generation MacBook Pro.

By using larger glass substrates, Samsung can manufacture these panels more efficiently and at a higher volume, which is key to bringing OLED technology to larger screens without astronomical price hikes. The report highlights that these new panels will utilize a dual-stack (tandem) OLED structure. This is the same advanced technology Apple recently introduced in the M5 iPad Pro, and it is expected to deliver the highest display quality ever seen on a notebook. For those unfamiliar with the term, “dual-stack tandem” means the panel features two light-emitting layers instead of one.

While Apple recently updated the MacBook Pro with the M5 series, those models still utilize Mini-LED displays. This new production cycle points toward a major redesign slated for late 2026 or early 2027, likely coinciding with the debut of the M6 chip. Rumors also suggest this redesign could finally bring a thinner chassis and potentially even touchscreen support to the Mac for the first time.

What do you think? Are you holding out for an OLED MacBook Pro, or is the current Mini-LED display already “pro” enough for your needs? Let us know in the comments! Stay updated with the latest news on this by downloading the Appleosophy App from the App Store or by visiting our website.
