A few months ago, we reported that Apple was developing an iMac with an OLED display. Today, a report from ZDNet Korea indicates that Apple is going above and beyond with the future iMac, as that model will potentially have an even brighter display than the one on the current iMac.
First things first, Apple has requested display suppliers such as Samsung Display and LG Display to produce 24-inch OLED panel samples for the future iMac. As you may know, the current iMac features a 24-inch 4.5K LCD display with a pixel density of 218 PPI and up to 500 nits of brightness. Samsung Display mass-produces 160 PPI quantum dot OLED panels for monitors, so it would be a breakthrough for Samsung if the supplier wants to meet the display standards that Apple has in mind, down to every spec. LG’s samples are expected to follow suit, but unlike Samsung’s, they use color filters, so they may not be as bright.
However, don’t get your hopes up as Apple is aiming to launch the OLED iMac in either 2029 or 2030. Today’s iPhone lineup has had OLED displays as standard, and the iPad Pro has had tandem OLED displays as well. The next-generation MacBook Pro is expected to feature tandem OLED displays as soon as this fall. This timeframe for the iMac would make sense, considering that producing a larger display with the newest display technology available would require more engineering.
Anyways, for now, we should expect an update to the iMac this year, potentially with the M5 chip, along with a new palette of colors.
