Upcoming iPhone Ultra could feature dual-cell battery design

We’re just about two months away from when we expect Apple to debut its very first foldable iPhone, potentially dubbed the “iPhone Ultra.” One detail that remains to be seen for that foldable is the battery capacity, and a leaker known as “Digital Chat Station” posted the rated capacities of the battery cells. You read that right, apparently the iPhone Ultra could feature not one, but two battery cells rated at 1,921 mAh and 2,962 mAh for a total capacity of 4,883 mAh.

If this rumor turns out to be accurate, this would mean that the iPhone Ultra would follow suit of other competing foldable smartphones that implement a dual-cell design. So how could it stack up against other foldable smartphones in the industry? For comparison, the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is rated at 5,015 mAh, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is rated at 4,400 mAh. However, when comparing the iPhone Ultra to the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models, if we take a look at the eSIM-only variants in the U.S., the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are rated at 4,288 mAh and 5,567, respectively. This could mean that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could still be king in the battery capacity department.

However, an earlier rumor suggested that the iPhone Ultra could feature the largest battery ever in an iPhone, with a capacity of at least 5,500 mAh. Still, I think the iPhone Ultra will utilize a dual-cell design in order to slim down component size and maximize space efficiency. After all, Apple put tons of engineering into designing the iPhone Air with a super-dense battery, and Ming-Chi Kuo claimed the iPhone Ultra will also use higher-density battery cells.

There’s also a rumor from March 2025 that Apple has been heavily focusing on improving power efficiency, and that rumor appears to be backed by Apple’s next generation of silicon. The iPhone Ultra is expected to feature the A20 Pro chip, which will be the first to be based on the more efficient 2nm process, as well as the next-generation C2 modem in some countries, which could provide even better efficiency when connected to cellular networks.

The iPhone Ultra is expected to make its introduction this September, with potentially an average selling price of $2,500, with higher storage tiers being priced as high as $3,000.
